Steampunk Engine SPHQ 001

Posted on December 6th, 2010

Currently sitting, waiting, in the main street of Oamaru. An HQ collaboration publicly unveiled to coincide with the Steampunk: Tomorrow As It Used To Be Exhibition.

See text below for more info.

SPHQ 001

The Dark Engine from the center of the Earth returns!

Hauled from its underworld hunting grounds by the Field Agents of Steampunk HQ for immediate decommissioning, the 001 was once thought to be only a fearsome contraption of murky legend. Old stories were told of a great engine powered by subterranean steam factories and electromagnetic pulses. According to storytellers (and ‘self-confessed’ eyewitnesses) this enigmatic mountain crusher could, at a moment’s notice, rip itself from under the surface of the earth when summoned into service by the mighty troops of the feared and revered 7th Anti Interstellar Invasion Division.

HQ agents were called in when the engine went rogue – it was hijacked by under-earth and rather beastly (although not without a somewhat depraved sense of cave dwelling humour) creatures known  as ‘Dendrites’

The 001′s future is uncertain, but it sits apparently dormant and waiting, temporarily disarmed. Unfortunately, it could reactivate itself at any moment, and no-one knows what the outcome could be, now that it has been forced above ground!

Created By Don Paterson in collaboration with Brian de Geest and Kano.

Materials: One VERY heavy engine. Fire. Smoke. Masses of industrial piping and gauges and some serious blood sweated.
